Creating a warm and cosy winter night time routine is a perfect way to end your days in the winter. As the sky gets dark at around 4pm at this time of year, it can be all too easy to roll into bed a little and lose out on important self-care time. But it is even more important than ever to take time for yourself in winter, so here are some of our favourite tips and tricks to add into your cosy winter night routine.

Depending on how much time you have of an evening, some of this might best be saved for after kids have gone to bed.

Tips for a cozy winter night

Tip 1: Read a chapter of a cosy book

Reading is an inherently cosy activity. Curling up with a book is the perfect way to relax. We even have a post of recommendations for cosy reads for the longest nights. If you don’t have time for this, we can’t blame you, but listening to half an hour of a podcast or audiobook while you run through one of the other steps in your winter night routine might be a great way to help. Right now I’m listening to Jimmy Carr’s Laughing and Joking while I wind down for bed each night. Taking time to listen to or read something soothing is a great way to ready your mind for rest.

Tip 2: Drink a cup of non-caffeinated tea.

A hot beverage before bed is a classic and there are so many delicious teas to choose from, you’re sure to find something you’ll love! We like Lola's Apothecary's Clementine Calamity Relaxing Tea. Remember to only drink non-caffeinated tea before bed. This tip isn't the most inventive but it is a great staple to incorporate.

Tip 3: Remember to moisturise!

All that harsh, cold winter air is terribly damaging for our delicate skin. It can be depressingly easy to get into bed and snuggle down... only to realise you skipped moisturising. We know it's a drag, but moisturising is too important to skip! And while you're at it, don't forget your lips. They suffer the most of all your skin at this time of year and deserve to be treated, too! We love this Bristolmade's Lime and Mint Lip Balm. Prepare to ditch Vaseline, turn your back on Carmex and say goodbye to dry, flaky lips for good. Our sumptuous balm has a beautifully creamy texture and deeply conditioning properties, preventing and repairing chapped lips all year-round.

Tip 4: Dip into a warm bath

During the winter, your skin can be prone to breakouts or dryness because of the extreme change in weather. So it is very important to give it a rest from all the harsh weather and pollution it suffers through during your daily life. As a little winter treat, why not dip into a warm bath? We love using this delightful bath soak on a cold winter's night to really treat skin as it deserves. Verdant Alchemy's Ascent Pink Himalayan Bath Salts with a natural blend of 84 precious minerals, our pink Himalayan salts are like your daily multi-vitamin tablet in bath form. We carefully selected geranium rose and ho-leaf oils to promote mental wellbeing and uplift the spirit, while lavender oil soothes and calms the soul.

Himalayan Pink Salt, with its abundance of minerals, will gently extract toxins and nourish your body leaving you feel recharged. The salt helps reduce inflammation, providing relief to tired muscles, and the tranquil aroma of Lavender will gently help you unwind and relax your mind.

EXTRA TIP: Leave a bath towel on the radiator, so you don’t have too much of a shock going from hot to cold. If you don’t have a radiator in the bathroom, try filling a hot water bottle before you get in the bath and wrapping your towel around it for a little extra warmth!

Tip 5: Put on cosy pjs!

Okay this is probably the most obvious one, but importance of comfy sleepwear cannot be overstated. Why look scruffy in an oversized t-shirt when you could lounge in style in a matching pyjama set? It's like dressing for the job you want, except the job you want is professional sleep athlete. So our fifth and final entry on this list of tips is this: get comfy and cosy in cute sleep couture.
