When you receive an injury its like a lead weight stopping you from functioning normally. A sprain, tear, or break changes your routine and makes you feel off balance, both physically and mentally.

However, getting a good night's sleep might help you get back on your feet more quickly. Sleep is known to be a reliable method of refreshing the body and mind, but there's more to the science behind how beneficial it really is for your body's recovery.

Affect of Sleep On the Body

Sleep

During sleep muscles and tissues repair and rejuvenate and allow your body to heal. One reason for this is because during the deeper stages of sleep blood flow increases around your body, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the muscles. This regenerates cells and encourages repair and recovery.

The Healing Power of Deep Sleep

Another benefit of sleep is that there are certain hormones that are released during different stages of sleep. During non-REM sleep, at the very deepest level of sleep, your pituitary gland releases growth hormones which stimulate muscle growth.

If you are not getting enough sleep, or having poor sleep, you aren't getting the most out of your deep sleep processes.

Support your sleep

Sleep fundamentally allows the body to devote all of its energy to repair and regeneration of the body and mind. This allows you to recover more quickly from damage.

Because of this, It is worth making sure you have the best possible sleeping arrangements for your body. Sleeping position can be very important, I recommend this post on figuring out your best sleeping position.

The type of mattress and pillow support you have is also crucial to allowing your body the best rest it can have, especially when recovering from an injury.
