For a comfortable and restful night’s sleep its vital to choose the right pillow size. A pillow that’s too small may not provide adequate support for your head and neck, whilst a too large pillow is likely to cause discomfort and strain. But with different pillow sizes on offer finding the ideal pillow can be a confusing process. In this guide, we detail the most common UK pillow sizes and their ideal corresponding bed sizes.
See our chart below for a quick overview of the most popular UK pillow sizes. It’s important to note that there can be variations between brands as to the exact size measurements of pillows.
This is the most popular pillow size typically measuring 20 inches by 30 inches (50 cm by 75 cm). A singular standard pillow will fit easily on a single or on twin beds. Two standard pillows are well suited for a small double bed but not for a king size bed as it would take three standard pillows to fit the full width of a king size mattress! Having said that, they can look great used as decorative accents on larger beds.
If you've invested in a king size mattress, standard pillows may appear too small. The most common larger size is the King size which confusingly is often referred to as a Super King. King size pillows typically measure 20 inches by 36 inches (50cm by 90cm). Two king size pillows will fit a king size or super king size bed. However, if you want to achieve a luxurious look, they will also complement a standard double bed.
Super king pillows are the largest pillow size available but are less common measuring 20 inches by 42 inches (50cm by 107 cm). Slightly larger in width than king size pillows they match the extra width of super king size beds which is typically around 214cm wide, meaning it will accommodate two super king pillows perfectly.
Body pillow sizes vary but are considerably larger than any other pillow style as they are used to support the entire body, instead of just the head and neck. They are typically around 20 inches by 59 inches (50cm by 150cm) so if you want to use a body pillow as your main pillow, you will need a king or super king size bed to accommodate their extra length. They are great for improving sleeping posture, aligning the head, neck, and back when cradled from the side so can be beneficial for side sleepers. They can also be a good option for pregnant women, as well as sleepers with back or hip pain or arthritis. These pillows usually come with their own pillowcases of the correct size.
Euro pillows or square pillows are typically 26 inches by 26 inches (65cm by 65cm) and are generally used on various size beds for decoration or upright support, rather than for sleep. Their shape can prop up the head and upper body better than a standard rectangular pillow so they’re best for reading in bed or acting as an alternative to a headboard. However, if you want pillows to use for sleep, we recommend you choose rectangular pillows.
For a decorative and aesthetic look mixing and matching by layering larger pillows behind, and smaller ones such as the square pillow in front can create a luxurious feel and look.
Another factor to consider is the position you sleep in as this will also influence the ideal pillow size for you. It’s essential to choose a pillow that provides the right level of support for your sleeping position. If you are a side sleeper you will generally be comfortable sleeping on any size pillow, so long as the height is right - make sure your neck, hips, and knees sit at the right height for the correct spinal alignment. If a back sleeper, you will benefit from a smaller size pillow to reduce the amount of space so that your head doesn't sink too deeply.
If you are a stomach sleeper, you will want a larger surface area to lay your head and neck on comfortably.
A further consideration when finding the correct pillow size is your body size. Taller and heavier people typically prefer a longer pillow regardless of the mattress size to provide full neck and head support as this will prove to be more comfortable. Conversely, a lighter or more petite person should opt for a smaller pillow.
If you’re unsure of the pillowcase size you need, we recommend measuring your pillow first. The correct size pillowcase will leave room to flatten out the pillow and adjust the pillow height/thickness or loft once the pillow is inside. It will also extend the life of your pillow and pillowcase by preventing excessive wear and tear.
Most manufacturers tend to make their pillowcases a little large to accommodate variations in pillow sizes. When purchasing a pillowcase go larger if you want your pillow to have a full and plump look, go smaller if you want your pillow to keep its volume and height.
Measuring the dimensions of a pillow is straight forward. Most pillow measurements are presented as width by length.
The most common pillowcase size is the Housewife also referred to as Standard. It has a solid sewn edge, which fits perfectly around a standard pillow measuring 20 inches by 30 inches (50x75cm).
The Oxford pillowcase has a wide stitched flat hem around the edge to create a border, giving the pillowcase a stylish and more luxurious look. The size of this hem can vary in width but is typically around 5cm. It measures internally 50x75cm the same as the Housewife but because of the hem size looks bigger. This will also fit a standard size pillow.
This pillowcase is typically 15cm longer than a standard so is more oblong in size. It will fit a king /super king size pillow.
This pillowcase will fit a square pillow size 65x65cm.
The pillowcase fabric is also an important factor to consider when choosing a pillowcase as it plays the biggest role in terms of comfort. When it comes to material, there are many options on the market - cotton, linen, silk, tencel and bamboo, each material has its own unique qualities, contributing to the overall feel and durability of your pillowcase.
Choosing the right pillow size will ultimately come down to personal preference. Whilst some people will prefer the cosiness of a smaller pillow, others will enjoy the luxurious look and feel of a larger pillow.
