Christmas (which as far as I'm concerned is the whole month of December) is the cosiest season of the year. What better way to relax at this time than with some lovely cosy movies? With options from the classic through to the modern, here is our roundup of the best Christmas movies to watch at Christmas.
The Best Christmas Movies
The Santa Clause (1994)
This whole series of films is filled with wacky hijinks, delicious sounding cocoa, and the joy of Christmas. Every year, our family watches all the films, and my personal favourite might be The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (mostly becuase I just love Martin Short as Jack Frost, even if growing up I was convinced he was Barry Manilow). But really, you have to at least start with the original. The film summary says: 'By helping Santa Claus with a Christmas crisis, Scott unknowingly agrees to become the next Santa Claus. Now, he has to deal with a suspicious former wife while trying to keep his secret safe.' But really, this is a modern Christmas classic and should be part of everyone's plans!
The Nutcracker (2018)
Now if it's a classic you're looking for, look no further than The Royal Ballet's interpretation of The Nutcracker. That's right, you can watch the whole ballet on Netflix! The timeless holiday spectacle about a girl who's swept into a fantasy world when her Christmas present comes to life. One of my all time favourite Christmas stories, this version is so beautiful it blows my personal favourite version (Barbie in The Nutcracker) out of the water.
Paddington (2014)
Want to feel cosy, but not up for anything overly Christmassy? For the perfect ratio of schmaltz to story, it's got to be Paddington. Beautifully crafted from script to cinematography, the Paddington films are two of my all time favourites. Perfect to watch year round whenever you need to feel the cosy vibes (along with some spectacular acting, this cast is crazy) this is a great film to pop on during this time of the year.
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
This is my pick for a classic family movie. I love any film where a serious actor deals with an insane cast, and so this Michael Caine Muppet romp is right up my alley. A firm favourite with children and families, there's plenty of asides for adults, and lots of goofy, Muppet-y hijinks for kids.
White Christmas (1954)
And the best is saved for last! White Christmas has always been my very favourite Christmas film. I had never seen the trailer before, by the way, but I am in love with it - although it does give away a lot more of the film that I was expecting it to. While I do love the Peggy Lee Bing Crosby White Christmas album, I will always be a little bitter that I can’t have Rosemary Clooney’s crooning blasting throughout the Christmas period. As an alto in every school choir, Clooney will always be my singing icon – her voice is just so completely dreamy. And yes I did take three minutes and 46 seconds out of my work day to watch the full Mandy dance routine from White Christmas while ‘researching’ this article, but don’t tell my boss! As the trailer says, 'it's the greatest gift of entertainment the screen has ever given you'.
